Employment

  1. Zooniverse, University of Oxford, UK

Senior Front End Developer, October 2015–Present
Front End Developer, October 2014–October 2015

Currently, my principal role is contributing to the Zooniverse core platform, a large single-page app built with React, Stylus, ES6 and Coffeescript. I am also working on a £50,000 research grant – which I secured – to convert existing citizen science projects to the Facebook Canvas platform.

Previously, I was lead developer on AnnoTate, a crowdsourced transcription app developed for the Tate Museum. This project won the Platinum GLAMi award at the 2016 Museums and the Web conference, and was also the basis for a second transcription project, Shakespeare's World, for the Folger Shakespeare Library.

Other projects I have worked on include Old Weather, with the Meterological Office, and Cell Slider (now complete) with Cancer Research UK.

All of my work is open source and available on GitHub. Aside from writing code, I have managed project teams, interviewed developer candidates, advised in project management and scheduling, and mentored newer developers.

  2. Incuna Ltd, Oxford, UK

Front End Developer, November 2012–September 2014

At Incuna, I primarily built apps for major pharmaceutical brands such as GlaxoSmithKline and Janssen. One of these apps, the Risk Factor Calculator for Astellas Pharma Europe, won the Gold award at the PM Society's 2016 Digital Awards.

I also created several Backbone-driven sales apps for the iPad, a process I later streamlined by building a custom Yeoman generator for new projects. I also worked on several responsive single page apps using Angular and D3 to produce dynamic data visualisations, and the front end for a number of Django websites.

  3. University of Oxford Development Office, Oxford, UK

Campaign Web Editor, March 2010–October 2012

I developed, maintained and wrote content for several internal and external websites, all on different platforms. I also took on extra development opportunities where possible, building several WordPress sites with custom themes for special projects.

I also gained some experience in print design while creating various internal communications documents, and shooting video content for the websites.

  4. The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Tokyo, Japan

    Staff Writer, March 2006–March 2010

My primary roles were news gathering, writing and editing in both Japanese and English, translation, and photography. I also worked on a Javascript-driven bilingual comic series, and built a custom article archive for the site using KohanaPHP and MySQL.

Freelance

  1. Peroshi Ltd, UK

    Director, December 2014–Present

I set up a small company to work on bespoke freelance projects. Aside from primarily Django development, I also meet and communicate with clients, spec projects, and seek out new business.

  2. Politics in Spires, University of Oxford

    September 2012–Present

I created a custom WordPress theme, migrated the blog from basic hosting to an Ubuntu server, and carried out ongoing development and maintenance.

  3. Vincent's Club, University of Oxford

    September 2012–July 2013

The Vincent's Club of the University of Oxford commissioned me to produce a new site to allow them to connect with current and former members. I created a responsive WordPress site based a new premium theme, and customised it further with a secure Members' Area, including a searchable register.
